Die Fabel ist in ihren Grundzügen aus Alfred Hitchcocks “Trouble with Harry” (1955) und dessen Remake “Weekend at Bernie’s” (1989) von Ted Kotcheff bekannt: Ein Toter wird zu irgend einem bestimmten Zweck als Lebendiger ausgegeben und niemand merkt es bzw. darf es merken. In Zhangs Film wird diese Fabel in einer Reiseerzählung verpackt: Zwei Freunde, die weit entfernt von ihrer Heimat auf einer Baustelle arbeiten, haben einander versprochen, dass im Falle eines Falles sich der Lebende darum kümmern wird, dass der Tote in seiner Heimaterde beigesetzt werden kann.
Dieser Fall ist nun eingetreten und Lao Zhao (gespielt vom chinesischen Komiker Zhao Benshan) muss seinen toten Freund irgendwie von der Metropole Shenzhen bis in sein weit entferntes Heimatdorf bringen. Er bedient sich vieler Reisemittel: Eines Busses, eines Schubkarren, eines Treckerreifens, aber hauptsächlich trägt er ihn auf seinen Schultern. Auf seiner Reise begegnet er vielen, die ihm und seinem Auftrag nicht wohlgesonnen sind, ihn betrügen, bestehlen und verprügeln – aber auch Freunden, Helfern und sogar einer Frau, mit der er nach Beendigung seines Auftrags zusammen zu leben plant.
Die schwarze Komödie, als die “Getting Home” apostrophiert wird, ist in Wirklichkeit eine tiefsinnige Tragikomödie über Freundschaft, Landschaft und unerschütterlichen Durchsetzungswillen. Keine der zahlreichen Hürden kann Lao davon abhalten, seinen Freund weiter und weiter zu tragen und er stirbt lieber selbst an seiner Seite, als dass er sich von ihm trennt. Die Menschen, denen er begegnet, bilden einen Spiegel aller möglichen menschlichen Verhaltensweisen: So grotesk die Situation ist, in der er sich befindet, erhält er doch oft genug Hilfe und Zuspurch von ihnen, vor allem Essen, Beförderungshilfe und ein offenes Ohr für seine Sorgen. Andersherum zeigt Lao auch immer wieder, dass er die Lebenden genauso liebt, wie seinen toten Freund. Er hilft, hört zu, gibt Ratschläge, heilt Liebeskummer und materielle Not, obgleich er selbst stets am Hungertuch nagt.
Mit “Getting Home” ist Yang Zhang eine filmische Parabel auf das Leben und seine Fährnisse gelungen. Im Motiv der Reise entbergen sich die zahlreichen Stationen, in denen sich der Einzelne auf seinem Weg durch die Gesellschaft selbst immer wieder findet. Zudem bietet der Film unglaublich komische, tieftraurige und frohe Momente. Man fiebert nicht nur mit der hervorragend gespielten Hauptfigur mit, man leidet mit ihr und freut sich mit ihr über die Schönheit des Reisewegs (als Cineast auch angesicht der großartigen Landschaftsfotografien) und das Mitgefühl einiger Weggenossen. Wirkt “Getting Home” in seinem Kern völlig unpolitisch und lückt nur ganz am Ende einen realpolitisch-kritischen Stachel (gegen den Bau des Drei-Schluchten-Staudamms), so ist der Film doch auch als Aufruf zur Menschlichkeit – sogar gegenüber den Behörden – zu lesen. Dass “Getting Home” in China seit seinem Start ein großer Erfolg geworden ist, adelt und bestätigt seine Agenda vielleichtg.
Für mich ist Yang Zhangs “Getting Home” von allen bislang gesehenen Beiträgen bislang der schönste Film des Festivals, der einen Lauf in der Konkurrenz durchaus verdient hätte.
