Yau erzählt die Geschichte von “Piggy”, einer jungen Frau, die sich der Einheit gerade anschließt und noch etliche “Änfängerfehler” begeht – etwa den, die Verfolgung eines Verdächtigen abzubrechen, um einem verblutenden Polizisten das Leben zu retten. Dass der Polizist dann doch stirbt und Piggy ihr “Zielobjekt” scheinbar endgültig aus den Augen verliert, soll ihr zeigen, dass sie die falschen Prioritäten setzt. Und in der Tat passiert ihr dies kein zweites Mal: Als ihr Vorgesetzter bei einer späteren Verfolgung des bereits verloren geglaubten Verbrechers lebensgefährlich verletzt wird, lässt Piggy ihn links liegen und macht den so den Schlupfwinkel des Verbrechers ausfindig. Und wie durch ein Wunder verblutet der zurückgelassene Kollege nicht an seiner durchtrennten Halsarterie, sondern gesundet scheinbar wie von selbst und reißt dabei noch Witze.
Die Parabel, die “Eye in the Sky” bereit hält, ist simpel, ja eigentlich sogar naiv: Wissen und Technologie zum Guten eingesetzt haben gute Folgen – dem Gegner/Bösen scheinen diese Mittel zwar auch zu helfen, aber sie führen sie schließlich nicht zum Ziel, sondern ins Gefängnis. Ästhetisch verpackt Yau diese Moral in hektisch montierte Sequenzen, immer wieder Beobachtungskamera-Ästhetiken und trennt seine Szenen auffällig oft durch Interferenz-Blenden. hinzu kommt ein treibender Soundtrack, zwischen Elektronik und traditionellen Instrumenten.
Das Sujet des Films jedoch ist ein wenig altbacken: Eine Polizei-Buddygeschichte, wie sie im westlichen Kino der 1980er/90er Jahre Standard war, frei von Brechungen und reich an Klischees – bis hin zum erwartbaren Happy End. Die Schuld dieser Klischees ist es auch, dass der Zuschauer (zumal der deutsche, der die jüngsten Bestrebungen zum totalen Lauschangriff mit Schrecken zur Kenntnis nehmen muss) viel Zeit zum Nachdenken hat, während der Film läuft und von dessen Diskurs, diesem technologischen “Alles wird gut”-Optimismus unangenehm berührt ist. Vielleicht kann man das einem Hong-Kong-Film aus dem Jahre 2007 nicht vorwerfen, weil hier vielleicht andere Probleme bestehen als dort. Andersherum könnte sich Yau aber auch nicht beschweren, wenn sich seine deutschen Zuschauer angesichts soviel Hurra-Technologismus auf den Schlips getreten fühlen.
