Film ist ein Identitätsstifter – Spielfilmhandlung generiert Charaktere, füllt den Filmkörper mit einer (Lebens)Geschichte und Identität. Erst durch die Herstellung authentischer Figuren ermöglicht der Film es, beim Zuschauer Empathie zu wecken. Diese kann so weit reichen, dass die Figuren in der Problematisierung ihrer Identitäten zu Spiegelbildern für den Betrachter werden und darüber hinaus einige Zusammenhänge von Individuum und Gesellschaft oder Individuum und Kunst aufzeigen.
Pretending to be someone: Ad Lib Night (Süd Korea 2006, Lee Yoon-ki) (Forum)
Drei Männer treffen in Seoul auf eine junge Frau, die sie für die von ihnen gesuchte Myun-geun Ko halten. Deren Vater liegt im Sterben und will seine Tochter ein letztes Mal sehen. Weil die junge Frau jedoch abstreitet, die gesuchte Person zu sein und der Tod des Vaters in greifbarer Nähe ist, bitten die jungen Männer die Frau, wenigstens für einen Abend in die Rolle der Gesuchten zu schlüpfen: Sie soll lediglich die Hand Komatösen halten und sich für ihre jahrelange Abwesenheit entschuldigen. Sie lässt sich darauf ein und fährt mit ihnen in die Provinz. Dort hat sich die Familie brereits um den Sterbenden versammelt. Lange nicht gesehene Verwandte, die im Verdacht stehen, nur auf die Erbschaft aus zu sein ebenso wie Menschen, deren Leben eng mit dem des Sterbenden verbunden ist. Die Streitigkeiten und Konflikte, in deren Zentrum immer wieder unbeteiligt das fremde Mädchen aus Seoul gerät, werden von Zeit zu Zeit unterbrochen, wenn es neue Meldungen aus dem Krankenzimmer des Vaters gibt. Der Sterbeprozess zieht sich jedoch hin, man beginnt zu kochen und zu essen. Das Mädchen schaut sich indes im ehemaligen Lebensraum der gesuchten Tochter um und ahnt ein wenig, warum sie die Familie verlassen hat. Als dann der Vater dem Tod gegenübersteht, geht sie ohne Zwang zu diesem, nimmt seine Hand und bittet um Verzeihung. Bei ihrer Rückkehr am nächsten Morgen nach Seoul erfahren wir, dass sie selbst sich ebenfalls von ihrer Familie losgesagt hat und jetzt einsam lebt – so einsam, dass sie sich als Gelegenheitsprostituierte verdingt, um wenigstens auf diese Weise soziale Kontakte zu bekommen. Die erste Handlung nach ihrer Rückkehr ist ein Anruf bei ihrer Familie.
Lee Yoon-kis Film ist in seinem Stil gemächlich, ja fast schon unscheinbar und in seiner Erzählung so unspektakulär, dass man sich wundert, wie er damit 90 Filmminuten füllen konnte. Und doch ist es gerade diese Unaufgeregtheit in Stil und Sujet, die an „Ad Lib Night“ reizt. Die immer wieder aufbrandenden Konflikte, die Unsicherheit über die Identität des Mädchens (bei der man bis zum finalen Telefonat annehmen kann und vielleicht soll, dass sie wirklich die gesuchte Tochter ist) und nicht zuletzt die seltsame Aggression, die mit ihrer Tochter-Darstellung verbunden ist: Bereits auf der Fahrt von Seoul zum Haus des Sterbenden entdeckt sie im Auto Werkzeuge und Waffen und fürchtet, das Opfer einer Entführung zu sein. Dieser Verdacht wird zwar schnell aus der Welt geräumt, doch die Unwägbarkeit des auf sie Zukommenden bleibt – zu irreal und unmoralisch scheint ihr und dem Zuschauer der Wunsch, der an sie herangetragen wurde.
Vielleicht gründet diese Beklemmung in der Atmosphäre des Films daher, dass die Annahme einer gänzlich fremden Rolle in einer solchen Situation erst zeigt, was es bedeutet, eine Identität zu haben, jemand zu sein, der mit moralischen Verpflichtungen ausgestattet ist und Verantwortung gegenüber anderen hat. Die Persönlichkeit des jungen Mädchen, die bis zu Ende durch ihre Schweigsamkeit vage bleibt, wird für die Familienmitglieder mehr und mehr zu einer Projektionsfläche. Vergangene Fehler, schöne Zeiten, traumatische Erlebnisse, werden von den anderen Protagonisten an ihr gespiegelt – und im Wortsinne verhält sie sich wie ein Spiegel, ist für jeden das, was er in ihr sehen möchte. Selbst für den sterenden alten Mann, der sein ganzes Leben lang unnahbar gewesen sein soll, ist sie zum Schluss ein Bild der Menschlichkeit, das zu haben er sich vielleicht selbst gesehnt hat. Indem sie als Frau ohne Eigenschaften auftritt, erhält sie alle Eigenschaften, die man ihr zuschreibt. Sie wird durch ihren sozialen Kontext neu definiert und will schließlich nicht mehr darauf verzichten, wieder eine solche Rolle für andere (und damit für sich) einzunehmen. Die logische Konsequenz ist für sie also die Rückkehr in ihre eigene Familie
Ein kurzer Film über das Selbst: a.k.a. Nikki S. Lee (USA/Süd Korea 2006, Nikki S. Lee) (Forum)
Nikki S. Lee ist Foto-Künstlerin. Sie fotografiert sich selbst, zumeist mit Männern an ihrer Seite und beschneidet die entstandenen Bilder genau an der Stelle, an der sich ihr Körper und der des Anderen berühren, so, dass man noch sieht, dass jemand neben ihr steht, aber dessen Bild selbst verschwunden ist. Sie tritt dabei in immer neuen Verkleidungen auf, schlüpft in alltägliche Identitäten, ist mal schwarze Rapperin, mal japanische Schülern, mal Braut auf einer jüdischen Hochzeit – nie jedoch sie selbst. Wer sie ist, weiß sie eigentlich gar nicht und deshalb dreht Nikki S. Lee einen Film über Nikki S. Lee. Oder anders gesagt: Ihr alltägliches Leben, weltweit umher reisend, von einer Kunstausstellung zur nächsten, wird von einem Kameramann begleitet. Doch auch dabei, ist sie sich sicher, sich nicht selbst entdecken zu können, denn wenn sie in ihrem Alltag gefilmt wird, dann inszeniert sie diesen Alltag vor der oder für die Kamera. Authentizität ist so nicht zu erreichen. „I’m looking in myself from a distance“, sagt sie einmal und beschreibt damit eigentlich bereits das Problem der identitären Selbstkonstruktion.
Denn in dem Moment, wo man über sich selbst nachdenkt, macht man sich zum Objekt seines Denkens. Der Film kann dies Versinnbildlichen, indem eine Regisseurin namens Nikki S. Lee sich selbst vor die Kamera stellt, filmendes Subjekt und gefilmtes Objekt ist – jedoch nicht sie selbst. Man gibt die Authentizität in genau dem Moment auf, wenn man nach ihr zu suchen beginnt. Aus dieser Tatsache zieht Nikki S. Lee eine Lehre und begreift ihr Leben als „pattern“, das sich den jeweiligen Bedürfnissen der Situationen, in die sie gerät, anpassen lässt. So stiftet Nikki S. Lee sich ein Selbst, das eine Bricolage aus unterschiedlichsten Rollen ist. Das aber genau, glaubt man den Sozialwissenschaften, ist das, was eine Persönlichkeit letztlich definiert: die Summe von den Beziehungen, in denen sie steht. Indem Nikki S. Lee sich also auf diese Weise konstruiert, wird sie „selbst“. Ihr Film, der bezeichnenderweise mit einem „a.k.a.“ beginnt, zeigt damit vielleicht doch das, was seine Autorin in ihm sucht. Ob er – wie es der Stil andeutet und die zu Beginn formulierte Agenda plant – damit noch ein Dokumentarfilm ist, muss jedoch bezweifelt werden, wenn man Dokumentarfilm als eine Gattung (miss)versteht, die objektive Realität einfängt und diese nicht erst konstruiert.
